The Classical Opera Company, led by its conductor and Artistic Director Ian Page, is devoted to exploring the works of Mozart and his contemporaries. The Company presents one full opera production each year, around which a wide variety of supporting events are programmed to encourage and lead audiences towards a fuller appreciation of music. The Company's dynamic period-instrument orchestra, The Classical Ensemble, plays for all opera performances, as well as giving its own concerts.
Since formation in 1997 the company has mounted three of Mozart's early works, Apollo et Hyacinthus, La Finta Semplice and Il Re Pastore and worked with artists including the singers Joan Rodgers, Catrin Wyn Davies, Mary Plazas, Paul Nilon, Nigel Robson, Gerald Finley, and Ashley Holland, pianists Melvyn Tan and David Owen Norris, and actors Greg Wise, Michael Maloney and Janet Suzman. The company also prides itself on identifying and featuring outstanding young singers such as Jonathan Gunthorpe, Sarah Fox, Sandra Zeltzer and Sally Matthews.
