Conference 2004
THE CHANGE CHALLENGE?

CONFERENCE · Monday 15th & Tuesday 16th March 2004

Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells, Rosebery Avenue, London EC1

The biennial OMTF Conference is the opportunity for everyone within the sector to meet and consider major issues that affect opera and music theatre.  This year we are delighted to be working with Sadler's Wells and the Genesis Opera Project to explore the theme of Change.

Opera and Music theatre do not exist in isolation.  How can organisations, teams and individuals preserve their initial artistic vision and operate within a continually changing world?  The 2004 conference sets out to examine this challenge in three parts: Creating Change, Managing Change and Leadership and Change.

Monday March 15 CREATING CHANGE

10.30am
THE GENESIS OPERA PROJECT
The Genesis Opera project, now in its second cycle, is an international commissioning scheme that gives young composers and librettists the experience of developing and writing music theatre works.

Two presentations of work in progress with libretto readings, music extracts with ensemble and singers and open discussions.

3.15pm
CREATING
CHANGE
Artists are often at the leading edge of change in society; this is their strength and their challenge: how do they develop the artform and draw in the audience?

Introduced by Jean-Luc Choplin, Chief Executive, Sadler's Wells and chaired by James Conway.  Speakers include: Bill Bankes-Jones, Artistic Director, Tête à Tête;, Dominic Gray, Project Director, Opera North, Tom Morris, National Theatre, Carol Metcalfe, Bridewell Theatre

4.30pm
FUTURE
AUDENCES
Some surveys predict a significant reduction in the audiences of the future and a greater desire to be entertained at home.  How are we growing new audiences?

Katie Tearle, Head of Education, Glyndebourne, will introduce presentations from two European studies on Opera education, with Sylvie St Cyr (France) and Ann Laenen (Belgium)

Tuesday March 16 MANAGING CHANGE

10.30am
THE BIG
PICTURE
In order to survive, arts organisations must work within changing external and internal environments: how do economics, politics, society, demographics and technology impact upon a company's artistic vision?

Speakers include: Nicholas Payne, Director, Opera Europa, Anne Torreggiani, Director, Audiences London, Philip Spedding, Creative Development Manager, Arts & Business, Henry Little, Head of Opera and Music Theatre, Arts Council of England

12.15pm
RIDING THE CREST OF THE WAVE
Companies that have adapted to change or have influenced others share their experiences.

Chaired by Jean Nicholson, General Manager, Birmingham Opera Company, with Mark Tinkler, English Pocket Opera, Martin McEvoy, Crystal Clear Opera, Michael Henson, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

2.30pm
LEADERSHIP AND CHANGE
What is a leader?  How do we foster, develop and empower those who can dynamically balance artistic passion with external factors?
