The company was formed in 1994 to create new and innovative productions of musical theatre, comic opera and operetta in English, and to tour them to mid-scale venues all over the UK.  There are two major tours each year covering over a hundred venues countrywide with occasional overseas tours.

Opera della Luna regularly mounts Gilbert and Sullivan operas and the re-interpretation of old war horses into ensemble chamber pieces has become a hall-mark of the company's work; they were the first to perform The Merry Widow in this way, with the Lehar family's blessing.  Opera della Luna works regularly with the Iford Festival who have commissioned productions of Offenbach's La Belle Hélène, The Tales of Hoffmann and Robinson Crusoe.  In 2007 the company co-produced a new English version of L'Elisir d'Amore with Stanley Hall Opera.  More productions of Donizetti operas are planned.
