English Touring Opera is one of Britain's best known companies. Formed in 1980 as Opera '80 the company changed its name in 1992 but retained its policy of presenting opera in English throughout the country with a particular emphasis on areas where there is normally no access to the art form. The company mounts two tours a year in spring and autumn, each tour comprising two productions, one well-known and the other less familiar. One production is revived the following year.
ETO's comprehensive education programme seeks to introduce and explain opera in a dynamic and innovative way. From pre-performances talks to in-depth work with schools and people of all ages and abilities, there are opportunities for everyone to collaborate with company members in a range of exciting projects and events.
The company prides itself on being a hot bed of up and coming talent and some of Britain's leading principals have gained formative experience with ETO.
Production values are always high in its two annual
productions which, along with its 20 year pedigree, makes ETO the
touchstone by which all other tourers measure themselves.
