Intimate opera with a big kick.
A pioneering force in
contemporary opera in Britain and with a growing international
reputation, Music Theatre Wales presents its work to as wide an
audience as possible. It undertakes educational and outreach
programmes in association with performances, aiming to enhance
people's understanding and involvement in opera, develop professional
skills and help build a vibrant future for new opera. Productions
have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC TV and recorded for CD. In
1992 and 1997 MTW was short-listed for the Prudential Award for Opera
for 'Creativity, excellence, innovation and accessibility' and has won
the constant praise of audiences and critics since its creation in
1988. In 1998 and 2000, MTW was listed in the Observer's Top 10
Classical Music Events of the Year. Repertoire has included operas by
Britten, Birtwistle, Maxwell-Davies and Stravinsky and the company has
commissioned works from composers including Michael Berkely, John
Woolrich and John Hardy, Nigel Osborne and Lynne Plowman.
