New Kent Opera continues and celebrates the traditions of Kent Opera, formed in 1969 by Norman Platt. Led by Roger Butlin (a member of the original team) as Artistic Director, Tim Carroll as Director of productions and Gary Cooper as Musical Director, the company still aims to present 'undoubted masterpieces' for the forces for which they were written; to present them from a fresh angle; and to explore links between opera, music and theatre.
Currently based at Margate's Georgian Theatre Royal, the company intends to be a vital part of the regeneration of East Kent. New Kent Opera was launched in 2002 with a spring festival combining opera (Handel's Acis and Galatea), drama (Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer), chamber music and spoken word. Creating their own festival was an important development for the company and it has now become an annual event with Britten's Albert Herring featuring in 2003 and Mozart's Il Re pastore planned for 2004.
It's the ambition of it all which is so heartening - the idea
that small-scale regional productions are worth putting on, a
belief that an audience can be reclaimed and a new one
developed.
