Pegasus Opera have pioneered and led the field in UK multi-racial opera touring since they were founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Lloyd Newton.
The company creates opportunities for young professional singers from all backgrounds to develop and perform in innovative opera productions. This policy is based on the belief that it is only through the nurturing of diverse talents that a new form of cultural harmony can be achieved, a harmony that encourages talent equally without regard to cultural heritage or ethnic background. The Company also seeks to demystify opera by making it accessible to as wide an audience as possible, actively involving a cross-section of the community. This includes programming an accessible range works. Pegasus Opera performs traditional and contemporary opera, and tours two productions once a year in repertory.
The on-going education programme reaches out to children from minority ethnic communities and areas of high disadvantage, to encourage exploration of the creative and educational possibilities of working with music, drama and design. The programme is divided into two parts; (I) Access and Participation and (II) Creation and Presentation. Part II culminates in the children performing a short piece of music-theatre at a London venue. Children, parents and teachers are invited free of charge to watch and afterwards stay to see Pegasus Opera's main opera production.
As part of Pegasus Operas commitment to develop new audiences and
provide opportunities to aspiring performers, with particular
attention to black and ethnic minorities, the Company is piloting a
Community Programme in London 2003. Members of local communities will
participate in a series of opera workshops, led by Pegasus Opera's
professional staff. The workshops will culminate in the involvement of
the community group in Pegasus Operas production at the UCL Bloomsbury
Theatre, without compromising the professional standard of the
Company. Pegasus Opera plan to develop this project throughout the UK
to tie-in with future national tours.
