Streetwise Opera produces a national programme of weekly workshops and
cutting-edge, professional operas involving homeless and ex-homeless people in
order to support their personal development and engender respect and
understanding of homelessness in the public eye,
Streetwise Opera has
been awarded 5-stars from The Times and featured in the New York
Times, national radio and television including the BBC 2 Culture
Show and has won the 2003 Social Innovations Award, the 2006 Id:ology
Award and nominated for Best Opera at the RPS Awards.
Streetwise Opera
produces three main programmes of work
- An annual opera production
combining professional producers and performers working with homeless and
formerly homeless people in different communities in the UK
- A Workshop
Programme involving around 450 weekly workshops in homeless centres around the
UK (and most recently North America), the performance of smaller-scale
productions and concerts, theatre trips for the participants and an annual
rural retreat
- A Work Placement Scheme offering opportunities for
participants to gain work experience in a variety of arts organisations,
This scheme has led to some participants gaining paid
employment.
Beyond moving, The arts have this magical power to
bring us closer together through our own creativity and through our responses
to that of others, This event proved it beyond a shadow of a
doubt, I doubt whether the performers or anyone else present will ever
forget this inspired and inspiring occasion
